Type:  Web-based service

Pros:  Easy to set up.  Unlimited autoresponders per account.  Web-based so no software to install or maintain.  Web-based interface makes it easy to edit your messages.  Can set follow on messages to any variation of schedule (after one day, two days etc).  Great assortment of bonuses if you sign up for the pay version.  Very fast – email usually goes out and received within seconds of a request.  Can have sign up through an html form or through a blank email.  Excellent reporting – one of our favorite features is the ability to see after which email customers decided to opt-out (if you are using a multiple email approach).  Emails can be of unlimited length and can use plain text or html and can have attachments. Price for a year is great.  Great customer support.

Cons:  No real cons to speak of.  This is the autoresponder service we currently recommend.

Type:  Windows-based service

Pros:  Extremely powerful and flexible system.  Layered pricing structure lets you decide what level of strength you want, plus upgrade prices make it easier to change upwards.  Instead of having to pay a recurring price yearly or monthly, one single payment purchases it for as long as you require an autoresponder service.  Unlike many equivalent Windows-based systems, a full-time Internet connection is not required in current versions.  A trial version is available for testing prior to purchase, allowing you 14 days before purchasing registration codes.

Cons:  Complicated.  Windows-based service, so it takes up space and processing speed on your computer, plus if your computer is off for any reason it doesn't work.

Pros:  Very easy to set up.  This is a web based service so there is no software to install or maintain on your site or computer. 

Can send combined HTML and plain text messages (one message works for both types of email).  HTML messages are a powerful marketing tool because the message can be formatted similar to the way that web pages are formatted.  Studies have shown that HTML formatted messages achieve a greater click-thru rate.  This is the only service we have found that allows for combined HTML - plain text messages that works with all versions of AOL.  If AOL users can see the richly formatted HTML message, they do, if the version the user is using doesn't allow formatted email, they still get the text message.  A great feature!

Allows for optional audio email messages.  Try it to see how effective audio can be.

Allows for click tracking of links in the messages you send.  Allows for unlimited messages.

Pros:  Easy sign up and set up procedure.  Allows the addition of sending every message with the recipients name.  Has a feature allowing purchase of either one account or unlimited accounts, so if you have multiple businesses or  web sites, each can have an account for less money than two separate single accounts.  Allows an unlimited number of follow up messages, set up on your predetermined schedule.  Allows usage of either Plain Text or HTML in messages.  Sends messages out very quickly thanks to T-1 DS3 service.  Includes a free email account.  Allows you to send out a message to all existing contacts whenever you want.  Free technical support, from 9AM to 9PM, Monday to Friday.  Filters out both SPAM and viruses.  

Cons:  Not as inexpensive as other autoresponders. No free trial or money back guarantee given.

Pros:  Multiple sign up methods, including a pop up box.  30 day money back guarantee.  Contains an autowrap feature, giving your e-mails a more professional feel.  Includes a counter feature which shows how many people are currently on your mailing list on any web page.  Allows personalization of e-mails.  Comes with anti-flame and anti-mail bomb protection systems.  Easy to back up your current mailing list.  Technically possible to install yourself.

Cons:   Only supports up to nine automatic follow up messages.  Highly recommends professional installation, making upgrades or modifications difficult to arrange.

Pros:  Price and flexibility.  One time payment instead of monthly or annual payments.  Has an online reproduction of the control panel, so you have a good idea of what you're paying for.  You can run as many autoresponder messages or series from one server and one domain.  More cost effective in the long run than a cheaper yearly or monthly payment plan.  Allows for both HTML and plain text messages.  Also supports file attachments.  Triggers both by email and by a web-based form.

Cons:  More server requirements than a web based service.  Less technically adept customers might need to pay for installation.
